Nelson Runs Fast 10.50/21.61 Double In Class AA

Damien Nelson of C.M. Russell flashed speed rarely seen at the high school level in Montana, and he won Class AA titles in the 100 and 200 in Great Falls at Montana state track and field championships.

Nelson ran 10.50 to win the 100, slightly off Chris Wilson’s 2009 all-time state best (10.48). Nelson also ran 21.61 to claim the 200 meters.

Annie Hill of Glacier won the AA titles in the 800 (2:10.94) and the 1,600 (4:51.62) to cap an illustrious high school career. Hill also placed third in the 400 (58.52).

Maddie Brockel of Billings West ran 12.28 to win a showdown with crosstown rival Breanne Fuller of Billings Skyview (12.32) in the 100 meters. Brockel also won the 200 (25.06) and the 400 (57.97). She anchored West to a 4x100 relay victory in 47.56, just .01 off the all-time state best.

Bozeman’s Duncan Hamilton won the AA boys 1,600 meters in 4:13.55.

Camila Noe of Bozeman ran 10:30.29 to win the girls AA 3,200 meters and she also finished second to Hill in the 1,600.

Ben Perrin of Flathead, a junior, won the boys AA 3,200 meters in 9:08.38.

Gabe Sulser of Billings Senior ran 14.22 to win the boys AA 110-meter hurdles.

Billings West ran 3:22.08 for the Class AA boys 4x400 relay title.

Justin Jenks of Helena Capital threw 64-3.50 to win the AA shot put and 172-3 to take the discus.

Brooke Kearns of Big Sky threw 157-0 to win the AA girls discus.

Sophomore Trey Tintinger of Helena cleared 6-9 to defend his title the AA boys high jump.

Junior Shelby Schweyen of Sentinel won the AA girls high jump at 5-7, the same height as Lucy Corbett and Delaney Bahn of Bozeman achieved for second and third place.

Junior Carter Hughes of Sidney won the Class A titles in the shot put (55-6.50) and discus (174-1) and older brother Garrison Hughes won the pole vault with a clearance at 15-6. (Hughes broke the all-time Montana record with 17-0 earlier in the season).

Park of Livingston won the Class A boys 4x400 with 3:24.43.

Beaverhead County sprinters Hayle Sundquist and Tylia DeJohn spearheaded the drive to a Class A girls team championship. Sundquist won the 100, DeJohn won the 200 and they joined forces for a 4x100 relay win (48.86).

Sophomore Angellica Street of Columbia Falls won the Class A javelin with 147-7.

Bryn Morley led Bigfork to the girls team title with a big individual triple – 2:13.55 (800), 4:49.41 (1,600) and 10:46.41 (3,200).

Wrenzi Wrzesinski of Baker swept the Class B girls hurdles evens, running 15.40 and 45.84.

Versatile senior Paul Johnstone won the 800 meters, the triple jump and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay to lead Forsyth to the Class B team title. He also placed second in the long jump and was on the second-place team in the 4x100 relay. Twin brother Cade won the 400 meters (49.39) and was second in the 100 and 200, and part of both relays.

Corbin Wood of Ennis won the Class C boys 100 and 200, and was second in the 400, to help push his team to the championship. He also won the long jump and tied for second in the high jump – for 45 points. Woods’ twin brother Tanner was second in the 200 and third in the 100.

Zoe Delaney, a sophomore from Winnett-Grass Range, won Class C titles in the girls 100 (12.70) and 400 (57.88), and she also placed second after a photo finish in the 200 (26.00).

Class AA – Glacier boys 107 points, Sentinel girls 113 points

Class A – Corvallis boys 79 points, Beaverhead County girls 59 points

Class B – Forsyth boys 86 points, Bigfork girls 106 points

Class C – Ennis boys 59 points, Manhattan Christian girls 58 points
