Nyagoa Bayak Wins Girls HJ With Maine Record 5-11

One of the best high jumpers in the country, Westbrook junior Nyagoa Bayak, did not disappoint Saturday at the Maine Class A track and field championships. At Morse High in Bath, Bayak cleared 5-11 to win and re-break an all-time Maine record.

Just a year ago, she won the event on a height of 5-4. Her mark this weekend puts her in a tie for fifth nationally.  

Freshman Victoria Bossong helped guide Cheverus to a team title as she won the 100 meters (12.18), the 400 (56.95) and was also part of the winning 4x400 relay (4:05.00). Teammate Emma White dominated in the field, claiming victory in the long jump (17-5) and triple (37-4). She was also part of the 4x400. 

Oxford Hills junior Jadah Adams broke a meet record in the with 135-7 in the javelin.

In boys Class A, Falmouth and Thornton Academy tied for first with 67 points.

Thornton Academy junior Jason Montano won the discus (145-7) and shot put titles (55-2.75). 

Mt. Ararat sophomore Lisandro Berry-Gaviria won the 1,600 meters (4:26.66) and 3,200 (9:56.43).

Yarmouth senior Luke Laverdiere was a bit faster in winning the Class B 1,600 (4:23.09) and 3,200 (9:45.49).

Sophomore Sean Tompkins of Cheverus won the Class A 100 meters (11.06) and 200 (22.64). 

Elsewhere in the Class B meet at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft, the York and Mount Desert Island boys both scored 86 points to tie for the team title.

Senior Ben Cotton of John Baptist won the 100 dash (11.28), long jump (20-9.75) and finished second in the 200 (23.32).

In Class B girls action, Cape sophomore Darcy Cochran won the 100 hurdles (14.94) and 300 hurdles (45.97). 

In Class C action at Massabesic High in Waterboro, Maranacook senior Nicole D'Angelo led her team to a state title as she won the pole vault (10-0). Teammate Janika Pakulski finished second and Laura Ireland was fifth to give Maranacook 21 points in the event.

Junior Cymeria Ronshaw of Penquis won the girls long jump (17-7.75) and triple jump (34-10.5). 

Camille Kohtala, a junior from Orono won the 400 (58.57) and was second in the long jump (17-2.50).

Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook set a Class C record in the long jump, going 23-1.75. He also won the triple jump with a mark of 46-5. He is the all-time state record holder in the triple jump with 47-9.50 earlier this month.

Team Champions

Class A -- Falmouth High and Thornton Academy boys 67 points; Cheverus girls 84 points

Class B -- York and Mount Desert Island boys 86; Greely girls 67 

Class C -- Caribou boys 57; Maranacook girls 103
