Snyder, Spencer-Thompson Break All-Time State Records - Maine State Meet Recap 2019

Bossong Leads Cheverus Girls To Third Straight Title; Snyder (PV) and Spencer-Thompson (HJ) Achieve New All-Time State Bests

Just a sophomore, Cheverus High's Victoria Bossong has already made a big impact. Saturday at the Maine State Track and Field Championships at Lewiston High, Bossong guided her team to a third straight Class A title, scoring 30 individual points and running on the team's winning 4x400 relay. 

Bossong had a busy day as she won the 400-meter dash in a meet record time of 55.54 seconds, claimed the 200 title in another record time of 24.80 and added a title in the 100 in 12.31 seconds. 

In the distance events, standout sophomore Sofie Matson won the 1,600 (4:59.29) and claimed the 3,200 in a meet record time of 10:33.05. 

Westbrook senior Nyagoa Bayak repeated as high jump champ, clearing 5-8. 

Thornton's Travis Snyder had a day to remember at the Class A meet. The senior claimed the pole vault title in a new personal best and all-time state record mark of 16-9.25. His jump is also US#7. He added wins in the 300 hurdles (40.70) and 110 hurdles (15.15), guiding his team to a runner-up finish. Scarborough won the team title with 110 points. 

Snyder concluded his Thornton career with eight state titles, a school record. 

Class B

The Brewer girls dominated the field events, winning the pole vault, javelin and long jump, scoring 60 of their 84 points to win the Class B title at Brewer Community School. 

Cony sophomore Anna Reny set a class record in the 300 hurdles, running 45.12 seconds. She finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.59). 

Old Town freshman Izabelle Trefts broke the 1,600-meter racewalk record, clocking 7:26.07. 

In boys Class B action, Hermon senior Zachary Beaton won the 110 hurdles (14.85), 300 hurdles (40.55), long jump (21-4.25) and placed fourth in the triple jump (42-1.50). 

Class C

At Mt. Blue High, it was a record-setting day for senior Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook. Spencer-Thompson won the high jump in a state-record clearance of 6-11 for US#7. He also reset his own meet records in the long jump (23-2.75) and triple jump (48-3.75). 

Orono senior Camille Kohtala led her team to a Class C state title, winning two events. Kohtala won the long jump in a meet record leap of 18-00.75, breaking Kim Armstrong of Old Orchard's record of 17-11.75, set in 1985. Kotala also won the won the 200 (26.13) and finished third in the 400 (1:01.72). 

Winthrop junior Jillian Schmelzer won the 100 (12.5, tied the meet record in the 400 (58.47) and was second in the 200 (26.28).
