Max Kaulbach wins two-mile race in N.Y.Published by
Max Kaulbach of Germantown Friends earned all-American honors yesterday when he won the boys' two-mile run at the National Scholastic Indoor Track Championships at the New York City Armory. Kaulbach, a senior, led most of the race en route to a time of 9 minutes, 2.65 seconds and a comfortable margin over runner-up Chris Bodary of Bishop Shanahan, who clocked 9:07.00. Central Bucks East's Josh Izewski was fifth in 9:19.27. At the state championships two weeks ago, Izewski won the 3,000 by beating Bodary and Kaulbach. In other highlights from the Armory, Simon Gratz's Khaliff Featherstone was third in the 400 with a 47.96, just 0.54 off the winning time of 47.42. Neshaminy's Kevin Steinberg was one of several area athletes earning fifth-place medals. He clocked 6.89 in the 60-meter dash. Terence Lee of Engineering and Science ran the mile in 4:15.73 for fifth place, and Cardinal O'Hara's Jason Johnson finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 1/4 inch. In the girls' competition, West Catholic's 4x400 relay quartet also ran fifth in 3:55.14.
Nike Indoor NationalsPenncrest shot-putter Karen Shump added a national championship to her remarkable career with a winning throw of 52 feet, 4 inches in the Nike Indoor Nationals at Landover, Md. Shump won by 11 inches over her nearest competitor, and Bayard Rustin's Alanna Owens was fifth at 43-111/4.
